Web.com Tour Utah Championship Announces Sponsor Exemptions

WEB.COM Tour at Thanksgiving Point Golf ClubSalt Lake City (June 29, 2016) – Tournament organizers today announced the two sponsor exemptions for the 2016 Web.com Tour’s Utah Championship being held July 21 – 24 at Thanksgiving Point Golf Club.

Utah native Steele DeWald and current Utah resident Marcus Burbank, were awarded the highly coveted unrestricted Utah Championship exemptions.  These players will join the field of 156 golfers competing for a PGA TOUR card.  All fifty PGA TOUR cards will come from playing the Web.com Tour season, as well as the season-ending Web.com Tour series event.

  • Steele DeWald – An Arizona State University graduate and Park City resident, Steele was a Junior Olympic Medalist (Alpine Ski Racing) and a four-year All-State High School golfer. He captured third place in the Scotland Junior Golf Championship.  Steele played golf as a freshman for Arizona State University recording ASU record low rounds of 62 and 63.  Steele’s career includes two top 25 finishes in the Siegfried and Jensen Utah Open, has won four times on the Pepsi Tour and has 12 top ten finishes on the Gateway Tour and two top fifteens on the PGA TOUR Canada.  Steele has limited access on the Web.com Tour due to his finish in last year’s Tour Qualifying tournament.
  • Marcus Burbank – Utah native Marcus Burbank is a local aspiring professional golfer and former caddie (2013-2015) for PGA TOUR’s Tony Finau. Marcus was on the bag when Finau finished T3 in the Web.com Tour Qualifying tournament and through Finau’s rookie season on the Web.com Tour and the fall portion of PGA TOUR’s 2015 season. While living in Hawaii, he won the Golf Channel Amateur Tour Championship.  He turned professional in 2007 and worked as the first assistant at the Ranches Golf Club. Marcus currently plays in local professional events and regional state opens in preparation for entering the Web.com Tour Qualifying tournament this year.

“As a partner of the PGA TOUR and host organization of the Utah Championship, the Utah Sports Commission is thrilled to add these talented Utah athletes to the field of world-class golfers playing in the event,” said Jeff Robbins, president and CEO of the Utah Sports Commission.

Local professionals will also have an opportunity to earn one of twelve spots determined at a qualifying event being held on Monday, July 18th at Talons Cove Golf Course.

Thanksgiving Point Golf Club is proud to host the Utah Championship for a second consecutive year. With the help of the PGA Tour Rules Committee, changes to the golf course have narrowed the fairways considerably and a reconfigured the fifth hole makes for an even more challenging course.

“We are really excited about how the golf course will be set up this year,” says Thanksgiving Point Golf Club’s Director of Golf Mark Whetzel. “In consulting with the Tour, we have changed our Par 5 fifth hole to a Par 4 for the championship and we have narrowed our fairways considerably. This new look to the golf course will place even more importance on accuracy and club selection in order to have good scoring opportunities. Missed fairways will result in challenging approach shots from the first cut of rough and especially from the thick and deep primary rough.”
The Utah Championship will be played July 21– 24 at Thanksgiving Point Golf Club in Lehi. Tickets can be purchased at the box office of Thanksgiving Point Golf Club.  For information and volunteer opportunities, please visit www.utahchampionship.com or call 801-328-2372.
